Last time we met
The sun shone so brightly
The sky blue as the Mediterranean sea
The wind whistled through the leaves, people hustled by
But my gaze was fixed on your face
My ears tuned in to every word you said
My mind recreating the warmth of our previous embrace
My body curved towards you, tense, waiting for that familiar touch
It never came
You sat close-by, but our bodies never touched
My skin seemed to sense you even though the empty space, but it was not the same
Was it all in my mind
Did your smile not really reach your eyes, hollow as meant for a passerby
Did your eyes shine just a little less brightly, distant, shutting me out a stranger
Was your laughter a little less spontaneous, guarded, forced, just to be polite
Your back arched as though waiting to sprint away in an instant, in reaction to a distant call
Was it all in my mind
I leaned forward, you moved away each time
Our conversations faltered, like patient acquaintances fumbling on what to say
The silences heavy, your eyes averted, shielding me from the inevitable
Time stood still, laden with unsaid words, desires not met
Have we finally run out of words
Have I overstayed my welcome
Is it time to part ways
Or is it all in my mind
